Piano Lessons

Piano is one of the most commonly played instruments in the world and learning the piano provides a great foundation for all other musical pursuits. People take piano lessons for many different reasons, some may want to study advanced classical music, some may want to learn jazz improvisation, while many others are beginners looking to improve their skills and have fun. With there being so many different styles of teaching and types of piano playing it is important that you find an instructor to fit your needs. At Music Royale we have more than ten piano instructors with a wide variety of backgrounds and music degrees. We have students studying classical, blues, jazz, pop and even music recording with Garageband. Our piano lessons are customized to help achieve the personal musical goals of each student. We believe that anyone with a passion for music should have an opportunity to play, including students with physical disabilities or special needs. Every student is unique and your lessons should be too.

At Music Royale, we offer many performance opportunities throughout the year for our students. We have recitals and informal performances, as well as open mic nights and our very popular Rock School class. Our rates are very competitive and all of our lessons are scheduled month to month, with no long term contracts to sign. Music Royale is an independent music store owned and operated by local, professional musicians. We are located just 3.5 miles north of 270 in Powell, Ohio at the intersection of Sawmill Parkway and Powell Road. Laura began playing the piano when she was 5 yrs old. As she grew, she enjoyed reading music as well as making up her own songs. She was asked to lead the music in a church. and composed many pieces for service, performing on organ and piano. By High School, she was in bands, performance choirs, plating solo and ensembles, and accompanying performers. She went to college for music at Capital University in Bexley, OH. There she played french horn in orchestra, and keyboard in electronic bands. She composed jazz and heavy metal music. She studied music media in film, completed the Chillicothe Recording Workshop, and worked in live sound at the company Stage Tech for 3 yrs. Laura graduated with a Bachelor of Music from Capital University in 1998.

Teaching and Philosophy:

Laura is experienced in teaching children and adults. She likes to recognize the student's interest and enjoys accommodating requests into the lesson plan. She teaches a variety of styles (classical, jazz, pop, etc), and also teaches the development of ones' own style. During a lesson. she teaches reading music, theory, and encourages composition. Composition is really no big deal - the simplest phrase can be beautiful, or fun, or rhythmic- whatever the person is looking for. Her students work to achieve a solid foundation as well as strength to create.

Other Interests:

Laura has worked as a bas-relief portrait sculptor for 15 years. She also enjoys Taiji.

Robert A. Cave is a native of Springfield Ohio, and has been studying piano since the age of 5. After making his debut recital at the age of 15, he went on to study with Julliard graduate W. Eugene Hudson at Jacksonville University. While at Jacksonville, Robert earned his B.M. in classical piano performance. Robert has performed in many competitions, and received awards from both the university and on a national level, including The Outstanding Piano Performance for 1999.

Through years of experience, Robert has developed a fun yet effective teaching style for all levels and ages.

Dr. Antoine Clark - piano music lessons instructor at Music Royale - Powell, Ohio

Dr. Antoine T. Clark earned his education and performance degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University, The Cincinnati-Conservatory of Music, and The Ohio State University. His teachers include James Pyne, Theodore Oien, Linnea Nereim, Ronald de Kant, Dr. Charles West, and Dr. Richard Schwartz.

In addition to teaching woodwinds and piano at Music Royale, Dr. Clark also is an adjunct Instructor of Woodwinds at Kenyon College, a Woodwind Instructor at The Jefferson Academy of Music at from The Ohio State University, and Clarinet Instructor and Symphonic Band Director at Camp Encore-Coda in Sweden, Maine.

Dr. Clark has previously held academic appointments that included Clarinet Instructor at Denison University, Interim Assistant Professor of Woodwinds at Wayne State College, Choral and Band Director at Linkhorne Middle School in Lynchburg, Va., and Adjunct Professor of Woodwinds at Randolph College.

Many of Dr. Clark's private woodwind students are members of premiere youth ensembles in the Columbus area. These include Junior Winds, Columbus Youth Symphonic Band, Cadet Orchestra, the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra of Ohio, and the Columbus Youth Symphony Orchestra. His students have been selected as winners of local competitions as well as to the Ohio Music Educators Association's All-State Band and Orchestra.

Dr. Clark has participated in music festivals both nationally and internationally. These include the Opera Thearte and Music Festival of Lucca, Italy; the Barga Opera Festival of Barga, Italy; the Ash Lawn Opera Festival, Charlottesville, VA; the Gateways Music Festival, Rochester, NY; the "Tutti" New Music Festival at Denison University; and the "NOW" Music Festival at Capital University.

His orchestral experience includes Principal Clarinetist of the Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra, Principal Clarinetist of the Dearborn Symphony in Dearborn, MI., and Principal Clarinetist of the Ash Lawn Opera Festival in Charlottesville, VA. Dr. Clark has performed with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, the Harlem Symphony, the Soulful Symphony, the Sphinx Symphony, the Central Ohio Symphony, the New Albany Symphony, the Mansfield Symphony, The Heisey Wind Ensemble, the Newark-Granville Symphony, and the Westerville Symphony. Dr. Clark is also an Associate Musician with the Columbus Symphony.

Lisa Clark - piano music lessons instructor at Music Royale - Powell, Ohio

Lisa Clark is a member of The National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and holds a BA in Speech and Hearing Science with an emphasis on voice study from The Ohio State University. She has studied privately with many notable and inspiring music teachers including: Hank Marr (OSU), Rebecca Lively (OSU), Gene Allen (Capital University), Michele Horsefield- Carney (Capital University), Vaughn Weister (Capital University), and Kim Nazarian (International Vocal Teacher and Soprano in the Grammy-award winning jazz vocal group The New York Voices).

Lisa has been a part of the central Ohio music scene for over twenty-five years. She is a jazz singer and preservationist, teacher, composer, and writer. As a featured vocalist, she has performed with many small groups, big bands, and orchestras including The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, The Columbus Symphony Orchestra, and The Columbus Jazz Orchestra; with performances nationally and locally in a variety of jazz clubs, theaters, festivals, and other music venues. She currently performs around central Ohio as a freelance vocalist, with the Erik Augis Trio, and with her own quartet. As a studio performer she has done a variety of local and national radio and television jingles and has recorded two solo CDs, Girl Blue and The Colossal Joy Project. In addition to live performance and recording, Lisa also teaches workshops, clinics, and residencies in voice and jazz education. She is a co-founder of Jazz for Kids, a jazz preservation group that teaches early elementary age children about jazz. Lisa is also the creator of The Colossal Joy Project, which offers a number of positive therapeutic music programs for children, adults, and seniors including a monthly singing circle.

Lisa teaches both adults and children. Lessons offer individual student analysis and guidance toward achievement of desired goals with a focus on a general understanding of the vocal mechanism (for voice students), technique, theory, sight-reading, piano/vocal pedagogy, and development of good practice habits. Additional curriculum also includes but is not limited to performance skills and experiences, critical listening, music history, and other areas related to music education. Lisa also enjoys specialized teaching in the areas of vocal improvisation and relative pitch training, as well as coaching musicians and bands on vocal harmonies and blend. Lisa is proud to have worked with many of Central-Ohio’s finest singers and groups.

Jacqueline Bretz Eichhorn - piano music lessons instructor at Music Royale - Powell, Ohio

Dr. Jacqueline Bretz Eichhorn is currently affiliate instructor of clarinet at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, adjunct instructor of clarinet and saxophone at Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Mount Vernon, Ohio, and woodwind and piano instructor at Music Royale in Powell, Ohio. She received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Eastern Illinois University where she studied with Richard Barta and Dr. Magie Smith, and a Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degree in clarinet performance from The Ohio State University where she studied with James Pyne and Dr. Caroline Hartig. Dr. Eichhorn is an active chamber musician, performing in a reed trio and woodwind quintet that has played at colleges and universities throughout Ohio, and opened for such prestigious ensembles as the New York Woodwind Quintet and Eighth Blackbird. She also regularly performs with ensembles throughout the Columbus area, including the Central Ohio Symphony. Dr. Eichhorn recently returned from touring China where she gave clarinet master classes and performed chamber recitals at the Shenyang Conservatory of Music and the Conservatory of Music in Dalian.

It only takes a handful of notes for Todd to play before you start trying to guess where he's from...Chicago?...St. Louis?...New Orleans? Actually, he's a Memphis native. Having spent the first 25 years of his life there, it's no surprise when you hear hints of Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, and Booker T. Jones in his playing. Despite playing professionally for only 8 years, he has already toured with internationally acclaimed recording artists Jackie Johnson (Memphis Grammy Winner), Alligator recording artist Tinsley Ellis, and Ruf Records recording artist Anthony Gomes spanning 47 states in the continental U.S., Canada, France, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland. The last 3 albums that feature Todd were all top 5 on the Billboard Blues Charts, the most recent of which, Anthony Gomes Live, debuted at #1.

Todd's philosophy of teaching music involves inspiring students to find the excitement and satisfaction in music and providing the tools to do so.

Lucas Holmes - piano music lessons instructor at Music Royale - Powell, Ohio

Lucas began piano lessons at the age of five, and went on to earn a jazz studies degree from the Ohio State University, studying with Mark Flugge. As a freelance musician in Columbus, he serves as accompanist for the Ohio Dominican University Chorus and the BalletMet outreach program Momentum. He performs locally in jazz groups and two pop/rock bands, and in the past played for Princess Cruises in Alaska.

Lucas has been teaching piano lessons since he was in high school, and aims to impart his own passion for music-making on his students. His goal is to establish strong musicianship skills while keeping lessons fun and boosting students' self-confidence.

Caleb Hutslar - piano music lessons instructor at Music Royale - Powell, Ohio

Caleb Hutslar, a native of Worthington, graduated from the Fort Hayes School of Music with the State Board of Education Award of Distinction for musical excellence, and obtained a Bachelor of Music degree from OSU in piano performance in 1993 under various scholarships. His teachers included George Haddad and recording artist Andre LaPlante in classical piano and David Wheeler, Hank Marr and recording artist Tom Coster in jazz piano.

During his music career, Caleb performed both nationally and internationally with his own jazz group in such venues as the Kennedy Center and the Houston International Jazz Festival, and has performed with jazz heavyweight drummers Peter Erskine and Dennis Chambers and opened for guitarists Al Di Meola and Stanley Jordan, among others.

Caleb has given many master classes to various schools around Ohio. During this time, he has developed a teaching technique that uses ear training in addition to traditional sight reading to round out the students’ musical knowledge.

Michelle began playing the piano when she was six years old. By high school, she was a professional accompanist for both a local church and at a supper club in her hometown. At Otterbein College, she studied piano performance and composition and began writing her own songs.

Currently, Michelle sings and plays keyboards professionally in several Columbus bands and has been doing so since 1991. She has extensive recording and touring experience, as well as vintage and modern electronic keyboard knowledge.


She believes music is the universal language that allows people to communicate with anyone in the world regardless of cultural differences. That seems like a pretty cool skill to learn!

Teaching Experience

Michelle’s teaching experience includes being an accompanist and director’s assistant for an Upper Arlington middle school choir. She has also been teaching students of all ages privately for the past ten years. Michelle has experience with the youngest of children who simply want to play for enjoyment, but can also accommodate more serious students, who desire to become more advanced players.

Michelle teaches various musical styles (classical, jazz, blues, pop) throughout the beginning of a student’s career. She allows the student to explore the different genres before choosing the one (or ones) they like best. You can trust your child to have a positive experience in the loving care of a career teacher and player like Michelle.

Nick began studying the piano when he was 5 years old. He went on to study jazz piano at Capital University under the late and great Mark Flugge and graduated with a B.M. in Music Industry/Media. Since graduating he has been active in the Columbus music scene in many bands playing everything from jazz to metal. He is currently the bass and keyboard player for the Dirty Money Live Karaoke Band.

Nick has enjoyed teaching to a wide range of ages for over 8 years. He loves to teach jazz, classical, popular, and any other type of music you are interested in.

At an early age Daniel had understanding and deep love for music, especially anything featuring the stringed instruments. His musical studies began at the age of 7 when he started playing the Violin. At the age of 11 Daniel switched to the viola, and his music career began. He was a member of the Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestra from 1996-2000 seasons, where he participated in two European tours, and an invitation to the International Festival of Youth Orchestras, as well as the orchestras’ first commercial recording of Dmitri Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony.

In the fall of 2000 Daniel began his studies in Music Education at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. There he studied under teachers Dr. Catharine Carroll and Dr. Maaso Kawasaki.

In 2001, Daniel was chosen to become the first recipient of the Ted Pollock Memorial Scholarship for gifted string students from the Columbus Public School System. Daniel returned home to Columbus where he became a member of the Westerville Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Peter Stafford Wilson, and is now enjoying his 8th season as Assistant Principal Viola. Daniel has also been a member of the Central Ohio Symphony, and freelances with many other orchestras around the state of Ohio.
