Instruments Taught: Brass
Josh Decker earned his degree in Music Education from Ohio Wesleyan University as well as a Masters in Trumpet performance from Carnegie Mellon University. His teachers include Dr. Larry Griffin and George Vosburgh, former Principal trumpet of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
Josh offers lessons in all levels and styles of trumpet performance, beginner level of all other brass instruments, and beginning piano. Josh’s teaching philosophy as a trumpet instructor is “Develop your own sound, play all of the styles that are required of a trumpet player, and never put the horn down.” This philosophy comes from his experience as a freelance trumpeter in central Ohio, where it is apparent that being a flexible, intelligent and multi-genre musician is crucial to having a successful and happy performance life.
As a professional performer, Mr. Decker has played in symphony orchestras, performed and written music for funk ensembles, brass bands, mariachi bands, musicals, big bands, theme park bands and has had solo experiences including playing the Star Spangled Banner at the NCAA Track and Field National Competition in 2013.
Mr. Decker enjoys having a teaching environment that enables discovery and passion. He is a believer that there is not one good way to teach a single student, but that each individual is capable and will be encouraged to do something great.
