Open Letter from a Rock School Student

Hi! My name is Megan and I am a freshman who loves making music. I started playing the double bass in fifth grade, and since then I have learned many other instruments like guitar, cello, and viola. 

When I was 14 years old, I started doing Rock School here at Music Royale. It was really awesome getting to be in a band and playing whatever songs we wanted. We had a great performance at the end, but that didn’t come without some practice! I practiced my parts a lot at home and it was really awesome seeing myself grow as a player. I enjoyed spending my lessons learning new songs and cool solos. Some of my favorite songs to work on were “Don’t Look Back in Anger” by Oasis and “Snap Out of It” by the Arctic Monkeys. I was able to do back up vocals on one of the songs, and the other song had really epic bass parts, and it felt really good spending lots of time on it and getting a good performance. 

Rock School is really neat because you get to experience what it is like to memorize your songs, play on a stage in front of a big audience, and learn how to work well with your band. Us students also get many opportunities to use a lot of high quality equipment that we would never get to try out otherwise. We get to use lots of pedals with cool effects, which is really cool because you get to see what it’s like to play in a real band with real equipment. The teachers for the Rock School bands are very kind and supportive. They kept us on track, and they always answer our questions about performing on a stage, being in a band, and things about our parts. The teachers also support us during rehearsal by making sure we all feel confident in our own parts, and confident about performing! Sometimes in the bands it is challenging to set a good example to other band mates by not talking when the teacher is talking and making sure I am solid on my part. I really enjoy the performances we have at the end of each session. We have lots of independence, but we aren’t expected to do everything ourselves. The teachers help us during our performance by plugging and unplugging our instruments, and making sure everything sounds good. Without them, our performances wouldn’t be half as perfect as they are now. 

The private lesson teachers here are just as important as the ones who help out with the bands! My teachers help me figure out what notes I need to play, and they show me multiple ways to play something so I can try them out with the band and see which one I like more. Lessons also help you always stay on track. Since you meet with your band once a week, it is crucial to have that time at some other point in the week to work with your private teacher so you can stay on top of your work. Without the private lessons, it would be near impossible to find all the resources you need to give you that perfect performance. 

Rock School is a great program for kids and teens to try out. Rock School has helped me make many many friends. I have also learned lots about being in a band and what that means. From practicing your part, to challenging yourself, to working as a team, you learn it all! Before you start your Rock School journey, it is really important to learn the basics about your instrument. If you’re not sure where to start, there are so many amazing teachers at Music Royale. The great thing about our teachers here is that they all have immediate access to the band instructors, so no student is ever left without an answer to their question.
