Friendly Neighborhood Music Store
Some people start learning music because a teacher told them to. Others start because they cannot stop listening.
Brynn Beggrow is in the second group. She listened to so much music that one day the thought hit her: this is really cool, and I want to play an instrument. She walked into her first lesson with a plan, a favorite bassist, and a lot of curiosity. Today she plays three instruments, performs in several Rock School bands, and is already dreaming up what comes next.
We sat down with Brynn at your Friendly Neighborhood Music Store to hear how it happened. Here is her story, and at the end you can watch the full video interview to hear it in her own words.
When Brynn decided to learn an instrument, she knew exactly which one she wanted. Bass. Her main inspiration was Fieldy from Korn, though she is quick to admit she cannot play like him. She adds a hopeful “maybe someday.”
The other instruments followed because, in her words, they all just seemed cool. Her viola journey began with a friend who was already in orchestra. Brynn’s friend asked to teach her, and before long she was playing alongside her in orchestra too. That is how a casual conversation turned into a two year adventure on viola.
Today, Brynn has been playing viola for about two years, bass for about two years, and guitar for around a year. Three instruments is a lot to juggle, but she says the best part is simple. She loves playing, so practicing is fun.

Ask Brynn what is difficult and she does not talk about a lack of skill. On guitar, the toughest challenge is improvising. Her teacher might say, “Okay, play a solo right now,” and she has to make it up on the spot. On bass, she is working on slap technique. Across all of her instruments, she wants to keep getting better at sight reading and rhythm.
Notice what she does not say. She does not say it is too hard. She says it is something she is working on. That attitude is a big part of why her progress has been so steady.
Recently, that work paid off in a big way. Brynn learned the solo for “The Trooper,” something she once thought she would never be able to play. Her face lights up when she talks about it, and it is a reminder of what regular lessons can do. Goals that feel impossible in month one can become real by month twelve.

Brynn’s current songs on repeat are the ones she is memorizing for Rock School. She is in several Rock School bands, and she counts that as one of the things she is most proud of, along with being in her school’s chamber orchestra.
When we asked about her favorite Rock School performance, she laughed and said it might be all of them. Each group is different, the songs are good, and she has never walked off stage disliking a show.
She will also tell you the truth about performing. She gets nervous. When we spoke, the next show was about a month away, and she said she had been nervous since the first week of rehearsals. But after the performance, the feeling flips. She feels energized, and she turns to her friends and says some version of “oh my gosh, that was cool.”
That is exactly why we love Rock School. It gives students a place to feel those nerves, work through them, and come out the other side with more confidence. Brynn says playing with different people has helped her confidence and helped her get to know other musicians. Playing music with others, she explains, teaches you to work together in a way you cannot learn alone. If you want to know more, take a look at our Rock School page.
Brynn has a clear opinion about teachers. She believes she would be much worse at everything if she were self taught. She knows some people can do it, but for her, having someone watch what she is doing is a huge help. A teacher can say, “Hey, that’s wrong,” or “Try this,” and a second opinion is just plain useful.
At Music Royale, she studies viola with Megan Wetzel and guitar and bass with Jesse McNamara. Her favorite part of the week is walking in and learning something new.
She also loves how the store feels. Almost all the teachers know her, and they tell her things like “Woah, I heard you playing. It was really good.” She says they are supportive and kind. To Brynn, that is one of the best parts of being a Music Royale student. Whether you are just curious or ready to commit, our music lessons are built around that kind of encouragement.
Every musician has a dream lineup, and Brynn’s is a fun one. Her top five musicians to jam with are Cliff Burton, Kirk Hammett, Duff McKagan, Fieldy, and Tony Kanal.
And what is the one song that always puts her in a good mood? “Word Up,” either the original by Cameo or the Korn cover. She is a Korn fan, so she says both are really good.
If her musical journey had a movie title, she says it would be something silly, like “Super Awesome Ride.” We think that fits.
Brynn has big plans. Her goal is to be in a really cool band, play places, and maybe even get paid for it. Eventually, she wants to write her own songs with that band. After school, she hopes to make music part of her life, possibly as a studio musician or in a band on the side. She knows it is hard to make a living only as a musician, so she is realistic that she would probably have a job too. But being in a band would be, as she says, very fun.
We saved the best part for last. We asked Brynn what she would say to someone thinking about starting lessons. Her answer was short.
Just do it.
She says it is really fun and really cool to know how to play an instrument. She joked about the person at a party who pulls out an acoustic guitar and plays “Wonderwall.” With lessons, she says, you could do that, but actually be cool. And then she added one more thing, in all capital letters: practice.
Brynn also had a message for anyone who thinks they are not musical. Nobody is not musical, she says. Almost everybody loves music. You can tap your foot to a beat, headbang, or dance. Everyone is at least a little musical.
When we asked what she would tell her younger self on the first day of lessons, she said it is going to be okay. You are going to love your teacher, you are going to love all of it, and you should practice.
Brynn’s journey did not start with talent. It started with listening, a little curiosity, and a decision to try. Two years later, she plays three instruments, performs on stage, and has big plans for the future.
