Meet Katey Hardesty, a saxophone instructor and multi-instrumentalist at Music Royale, who brings a unique blend of jazz expertise and classical background to her students. Katey’s journey with the saxophone began in fifth grade, and by high school, she had added flute and clarinet to her repertoire. She continued her studies at Capital University, earning her degree in Jazz Studies and Performance, specializing in both classical and jazz saxophone. Watch her video interview
Katey’s love for jazz runs deep, especially for its rich history and cultural significance. “Jazz has this amazing way of connecting us to American culture,” she shares. “I love the individuality it allows—it’s all about finding your own voice.” This appreciation for individual expression shapes her teaching philosophy, making every lesson a personal journey for her students.
Katey’s approach to teaching emphasizes self-discovery in music. “Music should be your own experience,” she says. Rather than prescribing a single approach, Katey guides her students to develop their own unique sound, supporting them as they grow into the musicians they want to become.
For anyone considering picking up the saxophone, Katey has a few tips. “First, get your hands on an instrument! Call us at Music Royale for recommendations, and come try one out. Then start listening—saxophone shows up in rock, jazz, and even classical music.” She recommends legends like Ben Webster and Charlie Parker as excellent inspirations for new players.
Beyond teaching, Katie is an active performer in the Columbus music scene, playing regularly with the Rick Brunetto Big Band at the Valleydale Ballroom. You can also catch her on Spotify, featured on Adrian Supos’ album Tenacity and the single Matrix Motivations.
