Teacher Feature: Meet Thane Leshner – Guitar & Voice Instructor at Your Friendly Neighborhood Music Store

At Music Royale, we pride ourselves on having a roster of passionate, experienced, and down-to-earth teachers who meet students right where they are—and one of those stellar instructors is Thane Leshner, our featured teacher this month! Watch his interview video!

Thane teaches guitar and voice lessons at Music Royale, bringing with him over two decades of performance experience and a true love for music in all its forms. Whether you’re into punk, jazz, ska, metal—or you’re not quite sure what your style is yet—Thane’s teaching philosophy is all about meeting you where you are.

From the Stage to the Lesson Studio

Thane’s journey into teaching music is one many musicians can relate to. “I was working a job I didn’t love,” he says, “and I’d been a musician all my life—playing in bands, taking tons of lessons—so I decided to give teaching a shot. And I really liked it.”

With over three years of teaching experience, Thane is committed to creating custom lesson plans for each student. Whether you’re a total beginner learning chords or you’re ready to shred on stage, he’s all about helping you find your unique path.

“If somebody wants to learn a specific style of music, we’re going to do that,” he says. “Whether it’s metal or punk or even ska or jazz, we’ll figure out how to make it work for you.”

Ready to start your own music journey? Sign up for lessons at Music Royale today and request Thane!

Why Students Love Lessons with Thane

Thane’s students appreciate that he’s not only a skilled musician but a relatable teacher who keeps things fun, real, and engaging. One of his favorite parts of teaching is witnessing those lightbulb moments when something finally clicks.

“It’s really cool to explain something and see somebody go, ‘Oh, I get it—I finally feel confident in playing this.’ That’s the best.”

With Thane, you’re not just learning how to play music—you’re also learning how to be a musician.

Columbus Music Scene Roots

If you’re local to Columbus, chances are you’ve heard Thane play. He’s been an active part of the Columbus music scene for over 10 years, performing in a wide range of projects from punk and metal to solo indie work.

Currently, he’s involved in:

  • Coffin Makers – playing bass
  • RK Maroon – also on bass
  • An unnamed metal project where he plays guitar
  • Compact Utility – his solo project

He’s no stranger to the DIY scene either, helping set up everything from house shows to field concerts powered by generators. And his involvement doesn’t stop with performing—Thane also gives back, helping organize the annual instrument drive for Our Music Columbus, supporting students in Columbus City Schools.

Pro Tips from Thane for New Guitar Players

If you’re picking up a guitar for the first time (or getting back into it), Thane has a few words of wisdom:

“Take your time, be patient. You get out what you put into it. Practice, practice, practice—even if that means jamming on the same thing over and over.”

And for students who want to get into playing in a band, Thane’s your guy. With 20 years of experience on the road, in venues big and small, and on stages across the country, he’s got insights that go way beyond scales and song charts.

Signs It’s Time to Upgrade Your Instrument

As students grow in skill and passion for music, they often reach a point where their first instrument no longer meets their needs. Whether it’s outgrowing a starter model or requiring higher-quality sound for performances, upgrading your instrument is a natural part of musical growth. At Music Royale, your friendly neighborhood music store, we specialize in helping musicians of all ages find the perfect upgrade. Here’s how to tell when it’s time to take the next step.

A. Is Your Instrument Too Small?

Starter instruments are designed to accommodate beginners, but they may feel limited as students advance. Ask your student:

Questions to Consider

• Do your elbows feel cramped? Playing a smaller instrument can feel restrictive, especially for growing kids.

• Is the sound unsatisfying? Beginner instruments often lack the resonance and tone quality of professional-grade models.

• Do you feel like you’re overplaying? If you’re putting in extra effort just to get a decent sound, it may be time to upgrade.

Solutions

• Size Up

For Band & Orchestra students, Music Royale offers a rent-to-own program through Sweetwater, making it easy to exchange smaller instruments for larger sizes.

For Guitar students, consider moving from short-scale models to standard scales or trying new body shapes. Think about transitioning to electric or acoustic, depending on your style.

• Upgrade Quality: Higher-end instruments feature better materials, like premium wood or specialized varnishes, and are often more durable.

• Enhance Accessories: Sometimes, upgraded strings, bows, reeds, or mouthpieces can improve the playing experience.

B. Are Your Performance Needs Changing?

For advancing musicians, performance goals often drive the need for a higher-quality instrument.

Questions to Consider

• Do I want music to be my career? Aspiring professionals need reliable, top-tier instruments.

• How much effort am I willing to put into performing? Your instrument should match your commitment.

• How often will I perform? Frequent performers benefit from durable and versatile gear.

Solutions

• Invest in Quality: Brand-name models and handcrafted instruments are designed for advanced players and deliver superior sound.

• Expand Your Accessories: High-quality strings, bows, reeds, mouthpieces, and protective cases are essential for regular performances.

• Upgrade Your Gear: Sound equipment, pickups, and pedalboards can elevate your stage presence.

Our team of professional musicians is ready to help you choose the right instrument and gear for your needs. Contact Us to learn more!

C. Is Repair No Longer Worth It?

Sometimes, an old instrument simply isn’t worth the cost of repairs. Here’s what to consider:

Questions to Ask Yourself

• Is the instrument’s value higher than the repair costs? If not, upgrading is likely the better option.

• Does the instrument have sentimental value? If so, consider preserving it as a keepsake and investing in a new instrument for playing.

Solutions

• Consult Our Luthier: Music Royale’s expert luthier, Scott, can evaluate your instrument and provide honest advice on whether it’s worth repairing.

• Replace with Confidence: Our team of real musicians can guide you through finding a high-quality replacement that fits your budget and needs.

Schedule a Consultation with Scott today to explore your options.

Why Music Lessons Are the Best Investment for Your Child’s Future

At Music Royale, your friendly neighborhood music store in Powell, Ohio, we’re passionate about empowering people through music education. Whether you’re considering music lessons for yourself or your child, you’re making a decision that can positively impact every aspect of life—cognitive, emotional, and social. Let’s explore why investing in music education is one of the smartest decisions you can make.

Cognitive Benefits of Learning Music

Learning music isn’t just about playing notes; it’s a full-brain workout. Here’s how:

• Enhanced Memory and Executive Function

Musical training strengthens memory, attention, and problem-solving skills. Studies show that these benefits translate into better academic performance. So, whether your child dreams of mastering math or becoming a creative genius, music lessons can help pave the way.

• Boosts Neural Efficiency

Early and sustained musical practice fine-tunes the brain, improving auditory processing and overall cognitive function. These benefits extend across a lifetime, helping to keep the brain sharp.

• Facilitates Language and Reading Skills

Music builds the brain’s ability to process rhythm and sound patterns, which supports language development and literacy. Kids who learn music often develop stronger reading skills earlier in life.

• Increases Creativity

Music unlocks the brain’s creative potential by linking memory and problem-solving skills. It’s the perfect outlet for kids to think outside the box.

• Improves Spatial Reasoning

Playing music enhances spatial-temporal skills, which are essential for math, engineering, and even architecture. The critical thinking learned in music lessons can serve your child in numerous fields.

Emotional Benefits of Learning Music

Music doesn’t just exercise the brain—it nurtures the heart. Here’s how music can boost emotional well-being:

• Reduces Stress and Anxiety

Playing music triggers the release of dopamine, the “feel-good” neurotransmitter, helping kids (and adults!) manage stress and enjoy a sense of calm.

• Strengthens Emotional Processing

Musicians are better at understanding and interpreting emotions, giving them an edge in empathy and communication.

• Enhances Emotional Resilience

Learning music helps build emotional regulation, teaching kids how to adapt and thrive in life’s ups and downs.

• Facilitates Emotional Expression

Whether strumming a guitar or playing the piano, music gives kids an outlet to express themselves in a healthy, fulfilling way.

• Improves Mood and Quality of Life

Regular engagement with music has been shown to improve overall mood, making life’s challenges a little easier to face.

Social Benefits of Learning Music

Music also fosters community and connection, which are key to a happy, successful life.

• Promotes Collaboration

Group activities like bands and ensembles teach teamwork and effective communication, skills that are essential in every stage of life.

• Builds Empathy

Music helps children understand and connect with others emotionally, fostering kindness and understanding.

• Encourages Cultural Understanding

Exploring diverse musical styles introduces kids to other cultures, promoting a global perspective and mutual respect.

• Strengthens Community Bonds

Participating in music brings people together, creating a sense of belonging and strengthening local communities.

• Supports Lifelong Friendships

Many students form lasting bonds through musical activities, creating friendships and networks that last a lifetime.

Ages 4-6: Early Exploration and Fun

Introducing young children to music is all about sparking their curiosity and keeping the experience lighthearted and engaging. At this stage, lessons often focus on games, exploration, and small rewards, like stickers, to encourage participation.

• Music Appreciation: The basics of rhythm, melody, and listening skills are explored through fun, hands-on activities. This stage lays the groundwork for a lifelong love of music.

• Piano: Perfect for young beginners, piano lessons teach foundational skills such as tempo and practice habits. Children can begin reading simple sheet music while building their technique.

• Ukulele: A beginner-friendly string instrument, the ukulele is lightweight, durable, and easy to handle. It introduces chord shapes and strumming techniques, serving as a perfect stepping stone for guitar.

Ages 7-8 building skills and confidene

Ages 7-18: Building Skills and Confidence

As children grow, their physical abilities, coordination, and attention span develop, allowing them to tackle more challenging instruments and set concrete goals. At Music Royale, we also offer performance opportunities like Rock School, Open Mic Nights and recitals to inspire growth and confidence.

• Band/Orchestra Instruments: With options for rent-to-own, this is a great time to explore instruments like flute, trumpet, or violin, often through school programs. Ensemble playing helps develop teamwork and listening skills.

• Piano: Older students can progress at a faster pace, diving into more complex repertoire without a preschool curriculum.

• Guitar and Bass: These instruments are popular for students interested in playing their favorite radio hits. Electric and acoustic options cater to different musical styles.

• Vocals: Vocal lessons focus on breath support, pitch recognition, and reading sheet music, accommodating voice changes during adolescence.

Music Royale Student Spotlight: Megan P.

Meet Megan: A Multi-Instrumentalist Shaped by Music Royale

At Music Royale, we love seeing students grow into passionate, well-rounded musicians, and Megan is a perfect example of what makes our friendly neighborhood music store so special. A dedicated student who first picked up an upright bass in fifth grade, Megan now plays six instruments—guitar, alto sax, bass guitar, upright bass, cello, and violin. She’s a member of her school’s orchestra and band, as well as the Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestra and Columbus Cultural Orchestra. With all that experience under her belt, she’s already thinking about a future in music education.

The Power of Private Lessons

For Megan, private lessons with her Music Royale teachers, Megan and Paul, have been instrumental (pun intended) in helping her advance beyond the traditional school music curriculum. “Some things in school move too slow,” she explains, “but with lessons, we can just push through them.” Whether it’s refining technique, tackling challenging pieces, or exploring new styles, private lessons have allowed her to move at her own pace and stay motivated.

That’s what sets Music Royale apart—our teachers help students grow beyond the basics, tailoring lessons to their needs and goals. Megan’s approach to practicing is a great example: she focuses first on what’s most pressing for upcoming performances, then shifts to other instruments just for fun. This balance keeps her motivated while allowing her to continuously improve.

The Joy of Playing with Others

While Megan loves music for its own sake, what really drives her is playing with others. “It’s fun playing by yourself, but it’s a whole different experience bonding with other people through music—even if you don’t know them very well.” That’s exactly why local ensembles, like the Columbus Cultural Orchestra, are so important. (And if you play an orchestra instrument, Megan has a message for you: Join CCO! It’s really, really fun!).

Advice for Beginners (and Those Thinking of Quitting)

Megan’s biggest challenge? Like many students, sometimes she waits until the last minute to practice before a lesson—something she’s working on! Her advice to new musicians is simple: keep practicing, have fun, and play things you like. And if you’re thinking about quitting? “Stick with it a little longer and think about why. If you don’t like the instrument, maybe you just need to switch.”

Why Music Royale?

Music Royale Lessons

Students like Megan thrive because of the supportive, personalized instruction they receive at Music Royale. Our experienced teachers don’t just follow a one-size-fits-all curriculum—they help students build confidence, explore their musical interests, and develop the skills they need to succeed.
