Music Royale Teacher Feature: Katey Hardesty

Meet Katey Hardesty, a saxophone instructor and multi-instrumentalist at Music Royale, who brings a unique blend of jazz expertise and classical background to her students. Katey’s journey with the saxophone began in fifth grade, and by high school, she had added flute and clarinet to her repertoire. She continued her studies at Capital University, earning her degree in Jazz Studies and Performance, specializing in both classical and jazz saxophone. Watch her video interview

Katey’s love for jazz runs deep, especially for its rich history and cultural significance. “Jazz has this amazing way of connecting us to American culture,” she shares. “I love the individuality it allows—it’s all about finding your own voice.” This appreciation for individual expression shapes her teaching philosophy, making every lesson a personal journey for her students.

Katey’s approach to teaching emphasizes self-discovery in music. “Music should be your own experience,” she says. Rather than prescribing a single approach, Katey guides her students to develop their own unique sound, supporting them as they grow into the musicians they want to become.

For anyone considering picking up the saxophone, Katey has a few tips. “First, get your hands on an instrument! Call us at Music Royale for recommendations, and come try one out. Then start listening—saxophone shows up in rock, jazz, and even classical music.” She recommends legends like Ben Webster and Charlie Parker as excellent inspirations for new players.

Beyond teaching, Katie is an active performer in the Columbus music scene, playing regularly with the Rick Brunetto Big Band at the Valleydale Ballroom. You can also catch her on Spotify, featured on Adrian Supos’ album Tenacity and the single Matrix Motivations.

If you’re ready to explore saxophone or deepen your musical journey, contact Music Royale to sign up for lessons with Katie. She’s here to help you find your own musical voice and connect with Columbus’s vibrant music community. Don’t miss the chance to learn from an artist dedicated to sharing the joy and individuality of jazz!

Music Royale Student Spotlight – Austin Kurtz

Austin started music lessons at Music Royale at the age of 6, taking multiple lessons from various teachers until he joined Jesse’s studio. Now, even moving all the way to Salem, OH won’t stop him from taking lessons with his favorite teacher. Virtual lessons haven’t held back Austin’s learning, as he has been accepted into his school’s jazz band as the only electric guitar player. Watch his interview video.

Austin’s main instrument is electric guitar, but he is also proficient on drums, electric bass, piano, woodwinds, tuba, trumpet, and trombone. Austin plays in his school’s school band on the Tuba, electric guitar in jazz band, and drums in the Slipknot cover band, Sick, he and his friends are starting.

His tastes have changed since he started taking lessons, but learning beginner songs have helped Austin ramp up his passion for music. His advice to beginning guitar students is,

“Please do not go for speed first…[learn] technique and really [learn] how you can use that technique to go into solos…”

Even with natural talent, Austin has to put in a lot of hard work to know this much. He said memorizing chord names has been his biggest challenge. As a Rock School Alum, Austin says he learned teamwork and stage presence. He says Rock School prepared him well to start improving in the jazz band.

Want to know more about lessons at Music Royale? Give us a call or send us a message. Read our teacher bios here.

Introducing Recorder King to the Music Royale Guitar Wall

What’s New?

Music Royale has a new line of guitars available. We are very excited to announce our partnership with Recording King! Let Sara tell you all about it!

About Recording King

The history of this company goes all the way back to the 1930’s as a house brand for Montgomery Ward. Keeping up with the historical importance, Recording King upholds their legacy using vintage designs and hand-assembled parts. If you’re looking for a guitar, banjo, or mandolin with a classic feel and sound with a retro look, stop by and try one! From beginner to pro, there’s a perfectly priced instrument for all budgets.

We’re all musicians behind the counter at Music Royale, so we have our favorites.

Guitars

Sara recommends the Series 11 all solid dreadnought with a solid spruce top, solid mahogany back and sides and comes stocked with a Fishman Presys VT Pick Up System.

Banjos

Dirty 30s Resonator Banjos are ideal for singer-songwriters and other folk style players. This banjo is on our wall because of how light it weighs and its classic tone. This banjo creates a retro vibe with its satin finish, maple neck and Remo Recording King banjo head.

Mandolins

We have the Dirty 30s Mandolin on our wall because it is more than an entry-level instrument. The focus is on the traditional A-style body connected to a comfortable C-shaped neck with an authentic mini-Recording King Jubilee headstock and ivory tuners and classy MOP fretboard dots for a rustic and refined look.

Guess what else? If we don’t already have it at the store for you, everything is also available through Sweetwater!

Stop by your friendly neighborhood music store and test drive a Recording King guitar from our wall.
