Teacher Feature Troy Kunkler

Rhythm, Grit, and a Whole Lot of Groove

Turn up the volume—this one’s got a backbeat.

At Music Royale, we don’t just teach music. We live it. And if you’ve ever wandered past a lesson room and felt the pulse of something unmistakably alive, there’s a good chance you’ve heard Troy Kunkler laying it down.

Troy is one of those musicians who makes rhythm feel less like a skill and more like a force of nature. A drummer first, a pianist when needed, and a lifelong student of sound, his journey started back in middle school—sticks in hand, curiosity turned all the way up. That early spark carried him through his percussion studies at Ohio University and straight into the heart of Columbus’s vibrant music scene, where he’s been a constant presence ever since.

And when we say constant, we mean it. Last year alone? 193 gigs. Yeah, you read that right.

Built on Rhythm, Driven by Passion

There’s something undeniably magnetic about percussion. Maybe it’s the primal energy. Maybe it’s the sheer fun of it. Or maybe—just maybe—it’s because, deep down, everyone wants to play the drums.

Troy gets that.

But he also understands that behind every killer groove is patience, discipline, and a willingness to sit in the struggle a little while longer than most. His advice to beginners is refreshingly real: take your time. Progress doesn’t always come in lightning bolts. Sometimes it creeps in quietly, showing up one day when you realize something that felt impossible last week suddenly clicks.

That moment? That’s the magic.

Teaching That Hits Different

Troy’s approach to teaching isn’t about cranking out cookie-cutter drummers. It’s about building musicians who can think, adapt, and grow.

Sure, you’ll learn the essentials—rudiments, timing, feel. The stuff every drummer needs in their toolkit. But beyond that, Troy opens the door wide. Into jazz. Into rock. Into whatever sound gets you fired up enough to keep going.

Because at the end of the day, that’s what matters.

His philosophy is simple: give students the tools to solve their own musical problems. Not just today—but for the long haul.

When the Going Gets Tough…

Every musician hits that wall. The frustration. The doubt. The temptation to pack it up and walk away.

Troy’s been there—and he’s got one message: don’t quit.

Instead, rewind. Think about the moments music meant something. The times it made you feel alive, or helped someone else feel something real. That’s your anchor. That’s what pulls you through.

And sometimes, having the right teacher in your corner makes all the difference.

More Than Just a Drummer

Here’s where things get even more interesting: Troy isn’t just locked behind a drum kit. He’s got serious chops on mallet percussion too—bringing a whole different texture and color to his playing.

And when he’s not teaching? He’s out there, everywhere.

From jazz ensembles to indie bands, pit orchestras to one-off university gigs, Troy’s calendar stays packed. You might catch him performing with October Ember, The San Francisco Threesome, the Doug Hare Trio, The Lightsey Jazz Five, or Continuo. He even switches gears and plays bass with Marvin the Robot. Throw in vibraphone sets and a steady stream of live performances, and yeah—it’s safe to say he stays busy.

But that’s the beauty of it. He’s not just teaching music—he’s actively living it, night after night.

Why Learn with Troy?

Because he meets you where you are—and then helps you go somewhere new.

Because he knows the grind and the payoff.

Because whether you’re picking up sticks for the first time or looking to break out of a plateau, he’s got the experience, the versatility, and the mindset to help you level up.

At Music Royale, the beat never stops.

And with teachers like Troy Kunkler, it never gets boring either.

🎵 Teacher Feature: Meet Brent Badger 🥁

At Music Royale — your Friendly Neighborhood Music Store in Powell, Ohio — we’re proud to have an incredible lineup of professional musicians shaping the next generation of performers. This month, we’re featuring one of our passionate instructors: Brent Badger, our resident drum teacher and lifelong groove-maker.

👉 Watch Brent’s full interview here

🥁 From Corporate Life to Cymbals and Creativity

Brent didn’t start out as a music educator. In fact, his first career was in the corporate world — but the beat never stopped. After over 40 years behind the drums, Brent found a way to turn his lifelong passion for rhythm into a second career teaching at Music Royale.

“I started piano when I was six and drums in the fifth grade. I played in marching band, jazz ensemble, and college groups. Music just stuck with me. Now I finally get to do something more with it — and I’m really excited about that.”

Brent brings that excitement into every lesson. His students learn that music isn’t just about hitting the right notes — it’s about building confidence, finding your groove, and unlocking creativity.

🎶 Teaching Philosophy: One Stone at a Time

Brent describes learning music as crossing a stream:

“You can see the other side, but you have to take one stone at a time. You might get your feet wet, but that’s how you move forward.”

His approach to teaching reflects his patient, problem-solving mindset — one honed both through decades of drumming and years of corporate leadership. For Brent, lessons have to be fun, but also focused.

He reminds students that even simple rhythms are worth celebrating:

“Enjoy the simple and don’t overthink it. Some of my favorite professional drummers are still students. Learning never stops.”

🧠 What Makes Brent Different

Brent isn’t your typical drum teacher — he brings a unique combination of professional performance experience, academic insight, and real-world perspective.

He’s studied with legendary drummer Steve Smith (of Journey fame), played in countless bands and trios around town, and continues to perform regularly with local acts like Step Back 3.

“That practical gig experience helps me give my students real advice. I can talk about what actually happens on stage — not just in the practice room.”

And when students hit walls, Brent knows exactly how to help:

“We break things down to the simplest parts. Maybe it’s just the right foot. Maybe it’s that one fill. Don’t stress — figure out what’s frustrating you, and tackle it one piece at a time.”

🪘 The Groove That Keeps Him Going

If Brent were stranded on a desert island with a drum kit, he says he’d play ‘Rosanna’ by Toto on repeat.

“It’s just got that perfect shuffle — a little hard rock, a little swing, and a lot of groove.”

That same groove shows up in his lessons, where Brent teaches students to feel the music, not just count it. He encourages creativity, individuality, and fun in every session.

Meet Aaron Pearson: Music Royale’s New Violin & Viola Instructor

At Music Royale, we’re all about connecting musicians with the right teachers to help them grow, level up, and rock out on their instruments. That’s why we’re excited to introduce Aaron Pearson, our newest violin and viola instructor. Watch the full interview here!

Aaron isn’t just a musician, he’s a dedicated teacher who thrives on helping students discover their own sound, find confidence, and push through those “this is too hard” moments. Whether you’re brand new to strings or dusting off your bow after years away, Aaron is ready to meet you where you are and get you moving forward.

🎶 A Journey in Strings

Aaron’s story started at the piano, but it was the viola that caught his attention back in sixth grade. Drawn to its deeper, richer sound and its size (a great fit for his tall frame), he was hooked. From middle school string orchestra to collegiate study, Aaron has been immersed in music ever since.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance – UNC Greensboro (North Carolina)
  • Master’s Degree in Performance – The Ohio State University (Columbus, OH)

Along the way, he’s performed unforgettable pieces like Leslie Adams’ The Ecstasy of Love, a contemporary work that showcases the viola’s incredible range and rhythmic drive.

🎻 Why Violin and Viola?

If the violin is fiery and bright, the viola is the underdog with range, depth, and versatility. Aaron describes it as “the best of both worlds,” capable of soaring high like a violin or blending low like a cello.

It’s a chameleon of sound—a perfect instrument for players who want flexibility and unique tone. And with Aaron as your guide, you’ll learn how to harness that power, whether you want to shred through classical repertoire, vibe with contemporary hits, or simply enjoy playing music at home.

🧑‍🏫 Teaching Philosophy: Support + Independence

Aaron believes in giving students space to discover their own “aha moments.” Instead of handing over every answer, he guides them to find solutions, building both skill and independence along the way.

“I really encourage students to come in with their own ideas—whether it’s a piece they’re dying to learn or a specific skill they’re excited to master. My job is to set them up for success and help them reach their goals.”

He welcomes students of all ages and levels, from absolute beginners to advanced players looking for refinement. If you love music, you belong in his studio.

🎵 Beyond the Lesson Room

Aaron also performs with the Columbus Cultural Orchestra, a unique ensemble that fuses R&B, hip-hop, and classical music into one powerful community sound. His commitment to both performance and education keeps his approach fresh, relevant, and connected to today’s music scene.

He continues to prepare for orchestral auditions, mentor younger chamber groups, and contribute to community outreach—all while building his teaching studio here at Music Royale.

⚡ Why Study with Aaron at Music Royale?

  • Personalized lessons built around your goals
  • A supportive teacher who challenges you while keeping it fun
  • Experience across classical, contemporary, and crossover genres
  • Lessons for violin and viola, open to all ages
  • A chance to join a community of musicians passionate about growth

🎟 Ready to Rock Your Strings?

Whether you’re picking up a bow for the first time or ready to push your playing to the next level, Aaron Pearson is here to help you unlock your potential.👉 Book your violin or viola lessons today at Music Royale and start your journey with Aaron.

From the Stage to the Lesson Studio

Thane’s journey into teaching music is one many musicians can relate to. “I was working a job I didn’t love,” he says, “and I’d been a musician all my life—playing in bands, taking tons of lessons—so I decided to give teaching a shot. And I really liked it.”

With over three years of teaching experience, Thane is committed to creating custom lesson plans for each student. Whether you’re a total beginner learning chords or you’re ready to shred on stage, he’s all about helping you find your unique path.

“If somebody wants to learn a specific style of music, we’re going to do that,” he says. “Whether it’s metal or punk or even ska or jazz, we’ll figure out how to make it work for you.”

Why Students Love Lessons with Thane

Thane’s students appreciate that he’s not only a skilled musician but a relatable teacher who keeps things fun, real, and engaging. One of his favorite parts of teaching is witnessing those lightbulb moments when something finally clicks.

“It’s really cool to explain something and see somebody go, ‘Oh, I get it—I finally feel confident in playing this.’ That’s the best.”

With Thane, you’re not just learning how to play music—you’re also learning how to be a musician.

Columbus Music Scene Roots

If you’re local to Columbus, chances are you’ve heard Thane play. He’s been an active part of the Columbus music scene for over 10 years, performing in a wide range of projects from punk and metal to solo indie work.

Currently, he’s involved in:

  • Coffin Makers – playing bass
  • RK Maroon – also on bass
  • An unnamed metal project where he plays guitar
  • Compact Utility – his solo project

He’s no stranger to the DIY scene either, helping set up everything from house shows to field concerts powered by generators. And his involvement doesn’t stop with performing—Thane also gives back, helping organize the annual instrument drive for Our Music Columbus, supporting students in Columbus City Schools.

Pro Tips from Thane for New Guitar Players

If you’re picking up a guitar for the first time (or getting back into it), Thane has a few words of wisdom:

“Take your time, be patient. You get out what you put into it. Practice, practice, practice—even if that means jamming on the same thing over and over.”

And for students who want to get into playing in a band, Thane’s your guy. With 20 years of experience on the road, in venues big and small, and on stages across the country, he’s got insights that go way beyond scales and song charts.
