Katey’s journey with the saxophone began in fifth grade, and by high school, she had added flute and clarinet to her repertoire. Katey’s love for jazz runs deep, especially for its rich history and cultural significance. “Jazz has this amazing way of connecting us to American culture,” she shares. “I love the individuality it allows—it’s all about finding your own voice.” This appreciation for individual expression shapes her teaching philosophy, making every lesson a personal journey for her students.
Katey’s approach to teaching emphasizes self-discovery in music. “Music should be your own experience,” she says. Rather than prescribing a single approach, Katey guides her students to develop their own unique sound, supporting them as they grow into the musicians they want to become.
